Your Freedom,
Our Fight.
Facing a criminal charge in Boston is a serious matter. Depending on the nature of the offense and your record, you could be looking at a lengthy jail sentence. Even if you are able to avoid jail time, a conviction can put you on probation, require you to pay sky-high fines, and jeopardize your ability to get a job or into school in the future. Boston criminal defense attorney Patrick J. Murphy has more than 27 years of experience aggressively defending the rights of clients facing serious criminal charges. He routinely appears in Boston Municipal Court, Central Division, and knows what to expect from the local prosecutors and judges.
Boston is unique among Massachusetts cities in terms of the court structure. While every other city is assigned to one of the 62 district courts around the state, Boston cases are heard at either the Boston Municipal Court or the Suffolk County Superior Court. Typically, less serious crimes, such as minor theft charges, drug possession, and OWI offenses, are heard at the municipal court level, while serious felony crimes are heard at the Suffolk County Superior Court.
There are eight Boston Municipal Courts. If you were arrested in the Downtown Boston area, Chinatown, North End, West End, Beacon Hill or South End (up to Massachusetts Avenue), your case will be heard at the Boston Municipal Court, Central Division.
The courthouse is located at:
24 New Chardon Street
Edward W. Brooke Courthouse
Boston, MA 02114
If you need to contact the court, you can reach the court clerk by calling 617-788-8600.
Unfortunately, due to the courthouse’s central location, there is no free public parking. However, there are metered parking spaces in the immediate vicinity and a number of paid parking garages in the area. You can also get to the courthouse on the MBTA or Commuter Rail. The courthouse is about a five-minute walk from the Haymarket Stop.
If you are looking for more information about your arrest, you may want to request a copy of the police report generated after your arrest. Police reports provide limited but useful information about your arrest and can give you a better idea of the government’s case against you. To obtain a copy of a police report, you can contact the Boston Police Department at:
Director of Public Information
One Schroeder Plaza
Boston, MA 02120
Keep in mind that you may not be able to get a copy of a police report if you are facing charges involving a minor, domestic violence allegations, or are believed to have intimidated witnesses in the past. However, most police reports are public record.
