Bristol County was created by the Plymouth Colony on June 2, 1685 and named after its “shire town” and the waterside English town. Bristol County is in the southern right corner of Massachusetts and boarders Rhode Island; Bristol County has a shared history with the two states. The county was formed by the transfer of part of Bristol County, Massachusetts, to the state of Rhode Island, and was the subject of a long-running border dispute. The towns of Bristol, Barrington and Warren were awarded to Rhode Island in 1746 to conclude the boundary dispute. There now currently are two Bristol Counties, one in Massachusetts and one to Rhode Island. As of 2010, the census the population was totaled to 548, 285.
